Obituary for Marjorie Ruth Chance

Marjorie Garrett Chance, the daughter of the late Novella Martin and Hiawatha Garrett, was born on June 18, 1942, in Cuney, Cherokee County, Texas. She was reared by her mother in Cuney, Texas. Marjorie graduated from Cuney High School in 1959 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History from Texas College, Tyler, Texas, in May 1963. Many more graduate hours of study over the years at Lamar University, Prairie View A&M University and Stephen F. Austin State University. In addition, 100s of hours of in-service training were completed, too.

During her high school years, she worked alongside Mr. Bishop Sneed at the Cuney Post Office where she made friends of all ethnic groups.

Mrs. Chance began her teaching career in 1963 at J. H. Rowe High School inJasper, Texas. There she met and married Royce Chance from Kerens, Texas, in 1965. To this union three sons were born. In 1968, the Jasper school system integrated and she spent the next 37 years of her career teaching English to eighth graders at Jasper Junior High School.

Before retiring in 2005 with forty-two (42) years of service, she served as UIL coordinator for the junior high school for more than thirty years, treasurer of the local TSTA for many years, and a representative to the District Site-based Committee from the Jasper Junior High School. She was a member of TSTA, as well as Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization for women teachers.

Mrs. Chance united with the Greater New Bethel Baptist Church in the late 60s where she actively served in many capacities: a Sunday school teacher, president of one of mission circles, and later the president of the Mission Ministry, and announcer for the church. Additionally, she serves as secretaryof the Lone Star Baptist District Women’s Association, the secretary of the Lone Star Baptist District Congress and the recording secretary of the Southeast Regional Women’s Auxiliary of Baptist Missionary and Education Convention of Texas.

Marjorie is survived by her husband, Royce Chance, Jasper, TX; three sons, Royce, Jr. (Cathy) of Dallas; Ronald (Richard) of Fort Worth; and Richard of Houston; two granddaughter, Brittani and Mia Chance of Dallas; brothers,Melvin(Oma) Cross, Nacogdoches, TX; Earl (Gennett) Garrett, Los Angeles; sisters: JoAnn (Horatio) Adkins, Los Angeles, CA; Sandra Morgan, Los Angeles, CA; Greta Sparks, Los Angeles, and Nadine Calloway, Jacksonville, TX; goddaughter Nikki Garvin; her church family and other relatives and friends
