Obituary for Joel "Steve" Crain

On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, Joel Stephen Crain, devout Christian, loving husband, and father of 3 girls, passed away at the age of 74. Steve was born on April 12, 1948, in Lynn, Massachusetts, to Jean and Joel Crain, but he was raised in and spent the majority of his life in East Texas.

Steve received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1976 from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, TX and went on to be an art instructor and mural artist. He had a passion for painting, drawing and sculpting, was a brilliant writer, and a gifted musician. He was humble by nature and perhaps unable to recognize his own talent, but he created extraordinary works of art that have been displayed in various galleries and venues over the years, including Theater Under the Stars, Century Auto Collection, Rotunda Gallery, Texas Artist’s Museum, Lakewood Baptist Church (Zavalla, TX), Dishman Gallery, Udinotti Gallery, Beaumont Art Museum, Roberto Molina Gallery, Gates Gallery, and many more.

Steve was known for his calm, soft-spoken demeanor, warm smile, sensitive heart, and kind and compassionate spirit. May he rest in peace and be comforted by the knowledge, joy and inspiration he gave to others. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Joel and Jean and his Uncle and Aunt, Dr. John and Doretta Gilchrist. He is survived by his wife, Della; his three children, Stacy, Anna, and Jessica; his brother and sister-in-law, Mark & Nicole; his niece and nephews, Alex and Juliet; and many cherished cousins, in-laws, and friends.

An open-house memorial service and celebration of Steve’s life will be held on October 23, 2022 at Doretta’s Lair on 202 US-69 / Woodville, TX 75979, from 1PM to 5PM. Pastor Steve will give a small service at @2PM.
