Obituary for Douglas Etienne

Douglas Etienne, 76, of Houston Texas departed this life Saturday July 9, 2022.

On October 11, 1945, in St. Martinville, LA., Douglas Etienne was welcomed into the world by his parents, Antoine and Agnes Etienne. As a child, Douglas was a confident young man. His siblings became his support system, as he unfortunately lost his mother at a very young age. As years passed, he migrated to Texas and attended Central High School in Galveston, TX.

In 1966, Douglas was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Hood. Before long, he and the 101st Division were sent to Vietnam, where he served for a year. While in Vietnam, Douglas received several awards including Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, 3 Bronze Service Stars and Expert Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar.

When he returned home, he met Betty Sly. On May 25, 1969, they were married in Austin, Texas. They eventually settled in Houston and started a family. Douglas was a very hardworking man. For most of his adult life, he worked in the transportation industry as he drove semi-trucks locally, as well as across the country. The better half of his days in the rig, were spent driving for the Port of Houston, before ultimately retiring from Grocers Supply. During his down time, Douglas proved to be a skillful auto mechanic. He later challenged himself to be a life learner in his craft and took night classes at Houston Community College to expand his knowledge base.

Knowing education is key, he had one constant message for his children. Get an education, get an education and again, get an education! His favorite saying was, “It’s better to have and not need, than to need and not have.” As a loving father, one of his greatest attributes was the innate ability to sacrifice for his children. It was clear to see what his family meant to him. His grandchildren and great grandson became the joy of his life. The love, concern and support for each one of them was an example of how a leader of the family should cultivate and encourage his lineage.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Antoine and Agnes Etienne; siblings, Prenella Etienne Andrus, Atrice Etienne Louviere, Antoine Etienne Jr., and Betty Etienne Bourda; son, Anthony Etienne.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Betty Etienne; daughters, Angela Etienne, Teri Makia (Stephen); sons, Lawrence Etienne (Katrissa), Brian Etienne (LaKeesha) and Moses Etienne; grandchildren, Antoine “Duke” Etienne, Brandon Etienne, Christopher Etienne, Bryson Etienne, Jaylen Etienne-Davis, Brianna Etienne, Zuri Makia, Stephen Makia Jr. and Zendaya Makia; great grandson, Jayden Etienne; brother, Lumas Etienne (Rose) and a host of nieces and nephews.
