Obituary for Dallas Lewis Jr.

Dallas Lewis Jr., 86, of Lufkin, Texas passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

On December 20, 1937, Dallas Lewis, Jr. made his grand entrance into the world, in Houston, TX, to the proud parents Dallas Lewis Sr. and Helen Williams. He established his relationship with Christ at an early age. His walk with Christ began at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Woodville, Texas. He then moved on to Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Kenneth Darden in Livingston, Texas before returning to PHMBC. He later moved to Lufkin, Texas where he joined Central Church of Christ under the leadership of Pastor Marshall Coffee. He was a faithful member until his health started to decline.

Dallas attended public school in Woodville, Texas. His love for horses as a youth, led to his hobby of breaking horses as a young man. On September10, 1955, Dallas married Creola Hafford with whom he had five children. As a young man, Dallas developed a passion for logging under the tutelage of Ben Reed. In 1975, he was one of the first black men to possess his own log truck in Tyler County. He worked for several decades in the logging industry as a truck driver, machine operator, and contractor. Dallas later had a second family of four with Cynthia Sheperd and lived in the Polk County area for several years before returning to Woodville. After retiring from logging, he kept busy by doing maintenance for the local Dairy Queen and sanitation for several Okay convenient stores ranging from Woodville to Jasper and Zavala. Dallas had a zest for life, and he enjoyed it by spending time with his grandkids and close friends. He loved barbecuing and cooking various meals for his family. He was blessed to help raise two of his grandsons Kristopher and Kameron. Dallas never met a stranger and got along with everyone. He was also known to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

As a praying man, Dallas often asked for healing throughout his illness sometimes saying, “whatever God offer I will take.” Dallas affectionately known as “Hulk” to many has concluded his earthy journey. He is ready to accept his crown of righteousness. Henchforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:8

Dallas is preceded in death by his parents, Dallas Lewis, Sr. and Helen Williams Turner, his wife Creola Lewis, two daughters, Dorothy and Barbara Lewis, two sons, Eddie Ray Barclay and Clayton Lewis, three sisters, Barbara Jean Lewis, Litty Mae White and Bertha Midkiff, one brother Richard Earl Blackmon, and one grandson Joseph Thompson.

Dallas leaves to cherish his memories five sons: Joseph (Willie Jean) Anthony, and Donnise (Mahogony) Lewis of Woodville, TX, Dallas Lewis III of Corrigan, TX, and Edward (Carlicia) Lewis of Lufkin, TX, two daughters, Iris Jones of Alexandria, LA and Lahoma (Burt) Harrell of Lufkin, TX, one brother, Edward Lynn Lewis, Sr. of Woodville, TX, special friends Cynthia Sheperd and Kenneth Murphy of Lufkin, TX, 27 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
