Obituary for Cornelius Eric Smith III

A life well lived...

Cornelius Eric Smith III arrived onto Earth September 25, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois to his parents Cornelius Eric Smith II and Ruby Helen Smith. He was christened in the Catholic faith and attended parochial school. He graduated from Mendell Catholic Preparatory High School in May 1976. Off to college he went enrolling into Western Illinois University. Immersing himself into college life was a good fit for Cornelius. He became a member of the ROTC, and Lambda Alpha Epsilon American Criminal Justice Association. He crossed the burning sands in Spring 1978 into the brotherhood of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Chicago winters can be brutal, so Cornelius set his sights to Texas for his life’s next chapter.

He started working for the Texas Department of Corrections in 1988. While at the Lewis Unit in Woodville he met his future wife, Teresa Collier. They were married June 13, 1992. Becoming a father to Dominique and Kasee would prepare him to add one more addition to the gang, whom we affectionately call Jr, because we couldn’t find a nickname for the IV. In 2017 after 29 years of hard work Cornelius retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as Senior Warden of the Clemmons Unit in Brazoria, TX.

Cornelius departed his life October 9, 2018, preceding in death his parents Cornelius and Ruby Smith. He is survived by his former wife Teresa Collier- Smith, three sons, Dominique Brown (Tiffany) of Hariman, TN, Kasee Brown (Chasmine) of Houston, TX and Cornelius Eric Smith IV (Hope) of Palestine, TX. Five grandchildren Le’Tydric, Taniyah, De’Vonte, Zaryion, and Zhy’on. Niece/Daughter Cameren Dennis, two brothers-in-law Anthony Collier and Dwayne (Daisy) Dennis, one sister-in-law Jacqueline Dennis, and mother-in- law Sammie Afolabi-Brown, Grandmother Jurlean Collier, four nieces, and two nephews.
