Obituary for Charles Edward Strahan

Charles E. Strahan was born September 26, 1946 to C.A. and Odell Strahan in Newton Memorial Hospital, Newton, TX. Charles departed this life on March 18,2021 in Upper Marlboro, Md. Charles attended the Indian Hill Christ Sanctified Holy Church in the Indian Hill Community during his early life into adulthood.

Charles spoke often of his education at the Mattox School, an all black school in his community not far from his homestead. He graduated from Wiergate High School as a Wiergate Panther, upon integration Wiergate became the intermediate school for the Burkeville ISD. Charles proudly attended Prairie View A&M University graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He also pledged Phi Beta Sigma fraternity while attending Prairie View A&M.

Charles moved to Rockville, MD in 1970 where he began his career as a teacher in the Prince George County Public School System. Charles worked at several schools within the county and after 42 years made the decision to retire in 2013. Although he enjoyed working in education he also worked with Metcalfe Industry in the HVAC division for 20 years. He enjoyed being active and filled his spare time assisting all that he met.

He also had a love for and an incredible skill in home repair and remodeling which he did throughout his life in Maryland and Texas. He could fix anything broken on a car, motorcycles most anything he could repair. You could often find Charles helping neighbors, friends and strangers with his vast knowledge, which he gave freely and unselfishly.

Charles never disconnected from his home state of Texas and he returned here often. After retiring and recently spending six months here in Texas he returned home in February shortly before his passing in March.

Charles is survived by five daughters and one son: Kenneth Rawls (Vanessa) of Dallas, TX, Khrona Shankle of Wiergate, TX, Marcella Strahan, Krista Strahan (Albert), and Portia Strahan, all of the Washington, DC area; Patrice Strahan of Oakland, CA. He also leaves five grandchildren: Sidney, Mary, Kenneth, Janell and Tyesha. and three great -grandchildren: Kevin, Kamirah and Omari. He talked with and visited many of his childhood friends and classmates from his home state, occasionally having dinner and taking trips in observance of those who passed away during his stays in Texas. He also leaves to mourn his passing a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
