Obituary for Bernadine Lewis-Garland

Bernadine Lewis Garland was born January 19, 1958, to J. Harvey Lewis and Fayetta Adams Lewis in Jasper, TX. She joined Westlake Baptist Church at an early age. Bernadine attended Jasper High School where she was a cheerleader and President of Student Counsel. She was crowned Miss Apollo in 1975, and First Runner up in Miss Jasper Pageant in 1973. After graduating from Jasper High School in 1976 she enlisted in the United States Army. Bernadine traveled while in the Military to Germany and Paris among other places. She also proudly served in Desert Storm in 1989.

Bernadine met and married Henry T. Garland and two sons were born to that union. After serving 16 years in the United States Army, she made her home in San Antonio, Texas where she lived for several years. During her 16 years in the United States Army, she studied at Creighton University and worked as a Laboratory Technician. She later moved back to Jasper, Tx where she joined Faith Temple COGIC and became a very active member and faithfully served her community. Bernadine loved the Lord, and she loved people. She hosted the Gospel Inspirational Hour and enjoyed providing the listeners with the word of God through inspirational songs.

Bernadine was employed as the Supervisor/Manager of Sweetbriar Hills Apartment in Jasper, TX for 20 years and was loved by her tenants. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with her children, grandchildren, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She loved to travel each year with a group of family and friends. Her last vacation was in September 2022 to Cancun Mexico.

She was the life of the party and queen of the microphone at every event she attended. She knew just how to enjoy life without limits. Bernadine believed in feeding everyone, especially with her Bernie Beans and Dressing. You could ask her for anything, and she would do everything she could for you no matter what. She was a phenomenal woman, and her personality, unmatched.

Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband, Henry T. Garland; parents Rev. J. Harvey Lewis and Fayetta Adams Lewis; and brother A.D. Mays. She departed this life on Thursday, May 18, 2023, in Galveston, Texas: Her legacy of love and caring so deeply for the people around her and her beautiful smile that would light up the whole room. She made an impact on many lives, her generous and free spirit will be greatly missed by all.

Bernadine leaves to cherish her memories her two sons Johnathan (Erika) Garland of Deridder, LA and Matt Frank (Nakyi) Garland of Jasper, Texas; Nine Grandchildren: Seven Grandson’s John’Tavian, J’Veair, Josiah, Jayce, King Caison, Matt Jr., Khamori: two granddaughters’: Matticyn and Jemyli. She also leaves to cherish her memory seven sisters: Katie Williams, Mae(Jessie) Woods, Diann(Lawrence) Spikes, Kathleen Spearman, Tracey(Valderick)Fowler all of Jasper, Tx, Tammie(Stephon) Mask of Lufkin, Tx, LaDonna(Christopher)Palmer of Houston, Tx; Six brothers: Eddie Lee(Lisa), Ray Charles(Janett), Taurus(Tonita)Lewis of Jasper, Tx, Clay Charles(Paulette) Lewis of Port Arthur, Tx, Glen(Jocelyn) Lewis of Houston, Tx, and Eddie James(Francois)Lewis of Dayton, Tx; Sister-n-Law Ruby Mays and a host of Uncles, Aunts, Nephews, Nieces, Cousins and Friends.
